Walter Scott Calwell Jr., a retired real estate title examiner who coached youth sports, died of an apparent stroke Monday at his Towson home. He was 86.
Born in Baltimore and raised in Homeland, he was the son of Walter S. Calwell Sr., an attorney, and his wife, Helen C. Wernsing.
He was a 1949 graduate of Boys' Latin School and earned a degree from the old Mount Vernon School of Law.
He worked in his father's firm, Callahan, Calwell and Laudeman. As a young law clerk, he worked alongside William Donald Schaefer, the future Baltimore mayor and Maryland governor, and J. Joseph Curran, the future Maryland attorney general.
Mr. Calwell retired last year as a self-employed title examiner.
In 1954, he married Carmelita J. Miller. They were introduced by a cousin.
Family members said Mr. Calwell played softball for the old Baltimore Federal, Belvedere Tavern and Charlesbrooke teams in a Towson Recreation Council men's league. He also coached basketball at St. Mary's of the Assumption and St Pius X schools.
He was active in Little League as a coach and was a past president of the Towson Recreation Council.
Mr. Calwell also ran the Campus Hills Citizens on Patrol for more than 18 years.
He enjoyed spending vacations in Cape May, N.J., at his family's home.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, 5500 York Road.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years; three sons, W. Scott Calwell III of Long Green, D. Tad Calwell of Eldersburg and J. Andrew Calwell of Lutherville; two brothers, James C. Calwell of Towson and Edward S. Calwell of Westminster; and his stepmother, Catherine Jane Calwell of Towson.
