Thomas G. 'Tom' Taylor, banker

Thomas G. "Tom" Taylor, a retired banker and Orioles fan, died Feb. 26 at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami of complications of lung cancer. The former Baltimore resident was 79.

The son of William J. Taylor, an American Can Co. executive, and Charlotte E. Taylor, a homemaker, Thomas George Taylor was born in Baltimore and raised in Roland Park.

After graduating from what is now Loyola Blakefield in 1955, he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Hawaii, where he was an expert marksman.

Discharged in 1958, he enrolled at what is now Loyola University Maryland, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1962. Mr. Taylor also earned a law degree in 1965 from the University of Baltimore Law School.

He went to work for the Equitable Trust Co. in 1962, eventually being named manager of the bank's Westview branch.

After he retired in 1982, he traveled to the U.S. Virgin Islands where he first rented a home and then became a permanent resident. While living there, he worked in real estate and property management.

He was a member of the St. Thomas Board of Realtors and was past chairman of its ethics committee.

A licensed pilot, he owned a private plane and liked island hoping to play golf with friends.

He was a soccer and Grand Prix fan, "but was most passionate about his home team, the Baltimore Orioles," family members said.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. April 11 in the Chapel of Our Lady of Montserrat on the campus of Loyola Blakefield, 500 Chestnut Ave., Towson.

Mr. Taylor is survived by a brother, William J. Taylor of Bel Air; a sister, Charlotte P. Burns of Ocean City, N.J.; and 23 nieces and nephews. His marriage ended in divorce.
