Thomas H. Carney, postal worker

Thomas H. Carney Jr., of Glen Avenue, was a retired postal worker and self-taught artist. (Baltimore Sun)

Thomas H. Carney Jr., a retired postal worker and self-taught artist, died of cancer March 30 at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center. The Glen Avenue resident was 73.

Born in Baltimore and raised on Fulton Avenue, he was the son of Thomas Robert Carney, a postal worker, and Evelyn Williams Carney. He was a 1959 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School and served in the Air Force.

After leaving military service he joined the Post Office and worked in its Druid Park-Pennsylvania Avenue Station. For many years, he was a letter carrier in Bolton Hill. He retired nearly 10 years ago.

Mr. Carney enjoyed drawing and painting. He created pictures for family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vaughn C. Greene Wildwood Funeral Home, 4101 Edmondson Ave.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 45 years, Janice Fox Carney, a retired Baltimore school teacher; a son, Thomas F. Carney of Baltimore; three daughters, Latrill Bryant-Bass of Baltimore, Alison Jones of Rogers, Ark., and Andrea Benjamin of Takoma Park; a brother, Dwight "Chuck" Carney of Baltimore; four sisters, Sonya Brown, Myra Richardson and Dorothea Beckham, all of Baltimore, and Theresa Lyon of Henryville, Pa.; and four grandchildren.
