Steven M. O'Connor, who owned and operated Bioserv Environmental, died of cardiac arrest Wednesday at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. He was 61 and lived in Glen Arm.
Born in Union City, N.J., he attended St. Augustine's School, of which he was an active alumnus and benefactor. He was a 1970 graduate of Downingtown High School, where he played football and wrestled. He earned a bachelor's degree in biology at Edinboro University in Erie, Pa.
After college, he lived in New Orleans and worked as a microbiologist for the Audubon Zoo. He also worked in shrimp fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. He later became an options trader on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange and then founded Pest-Ex, a pest-control firm.
After moving to Glen Arm in 2005, he founded Bioserv Environmental, which remediates mold damage in homes. The business is located on Edmondson Avenue in Catonsville.
Mr. O'Connor enjoyed outdoor work and cooked. He made jambalaya and other New Orleans-style dishes. He also painted in acrylics.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Johnson-Fosbrink Funeral Home, 8521 Loch Raven Blvd.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Carolyn B. Mortimer O'Connor, a physician; a daughter, Meghan L. O'Connor of New York City; a brother, John O'Connor of Pennsylvania; a sister, Barbara Bennett of Downingtown, Pa.; and a half-brother, Bill Lensi of Pennsylvania.
