Ruth S. Hurlock, a homemaker, volunteer and dog fancier, died Oct. 31 of cancer at the Blakehurst Retirement Community in Towson. She was 93.
The daughter of Henry E. Singewald, a Baltimore attorney and banker, and Eleanor Smith Singewald, a homemaker, the former Ruth Singewald was born in Baltimore and raised in Roland Park and Bel Air.
After graduating from Bel Air High School in 1937, Mrs. Hurlock earned a bachelor's degree in 1941 from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Va., where she was president of Tri Delta Sorority and a member of the May Court.
In 1941, she married C. Harlan Hurlock Jr., an attorney who later was the owner of the Fidelity Real Estate Co., which had been established by his father, Clarence H. Hurlock. Her husband died in 1976.
Mrs. Hurlock was an active volunteer and fundraiser for the Maryland Children's and Family Service Auxiliary. She was a docent and member of the Woman's Committee of the Baltimore Museum of Art.
She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Baltimore Country Club, Woman's Club of Roland Park, the Questers, a group of antiques collectors, and the Stony Run Garden Club.
Mrs. Hurlock, who had lived in a home in the 4300 block of N. Charles St. for 72 years, was a lifelong fan of Yorkshire terriers and at her death had Scarlett and Rhett, whom she had named for the two leading characters from Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind."
Mrs. Hurlock enjoyed spending summers at a second home in Rehoboth Beach, Del., collecting antiques, playing bridge and completing crossword puzzles.
She was a longtime active member of Second Presbyterian Church in Guilford, where she had been a member of the Chancel Guild, arranged flowers and helped decorate the church for holidays.
Services were private.
Mrs. Hurlock is survived by two sons, Clarence Harlan Hurlock III of Lutherville and John Davis Wrightson Hurlock of Lewes, Del.; a daughter, Ann Foxwell Hurlock of Homeland; and two nephews.
