Richard K. Dayton, manager for former C&P Telephone Co., dies

Richard K. Dayton, a retired manager at the old Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. who was also a pilot, died March 20 from heart failure at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. He was 93.

Richard Keith Dayton was the son of William R. Dayton and Victoria J.Troy Dayton.

He was born in Westernport and raised in Cumberland, and graduated in 1942 from Allegany High School.

During World War II, he served with the 111th Aircraft Battery as a radio operator and attained the rank of sergeant. He later served with the 589th Combat Engineer Battalion and with Korean occupation forces.

He was discharged in 1946.

Mr. Dayton began working for C&P while still in high school. He worked in cable maintenance, construction, installation and repair, and also performed central office maintenance.

He later joined the commercial department and, at the time of his 1977 retirement, was manager of the commercial and business departments at C&P’s Salisbury office. During his 35-year career, Mr. Dayton held posts in Cumberland, Oakland, Hagerstown and Chestertown.

He had earned a pilot’s license and was a member of the Flying & Soaring Club, an organization for enthusiasts of single-engine planes and gliders, and the Civil Air Patrol.

Mr. Dayton was a member of the American Legion, the Rotary Club, and Masonic and Shrine lodges. He had been a volunteer firefighter.

The former Salisbury resident had lived at Mercy Ridge Retirement Community in Timonium for the last seven years.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mercy Ridge, 2525 Pot Spring Road, Timonium.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, the former Irene Gardner; a son, Gary R. Dayton of Monkton; two daughters, Charyl L. Dayton of Parkton and Kay I. Messersmith of Cambridge; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
