Dr. Robert Axman, a retired Baltimore dentist and World War II veteran, died Saturday at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson of complications from cancer. He was 89.
The son of Philip Axman, a City College physical education instructor, and Beatrice Axman, a homemaker, Robert Axman, and his identical twin, Richard Axman, were born in Baltimore and raised in Forest Park.
He and his brother spent summers working as counselors at Camp Cody in New Hampshire, which their parents founded and operated.
Both brothers graduated from City College in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy, serving in the dental corps. After being discharged in 1945, they enrolled in the pre-dental program at the University of Maryland, College Park, where they studied until 1948.
The brothers studied at the University of Maryland Dental School from 1948 until graduating in 1952. In December of that year, they established a dental practice in Park Heights, and practiced together for 58 years, retiring in 2010.
The longtime Upper Park Heights Avenue resident, who in recent years lived at Park Towers, was an inveterate golfer and with his brother had been a member of Turf Valley Country Club since 1962.
During his golfing years, he had six holes-in-one, which he attributed to pure luck, family members said.
In addition to golf, Dr. Axman enjoyed "drinking an occasional beer and any meal that included shrimp," said his daughter, Heidi Pardue of Boulder, Colo.
A private gathering will be held, said family members.
In addition to his daughter, Dr. Axman is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Marilyn Sarubin; a son, Mitchell Axman of Alexandria, Va.; his brother, Dr. Richard Axman of Pikesville; and a granddaughter.
