Richard H. Hoffman Jr., an electrical engineer and sports fan, died Saturday at Stella Maris Hospice from a glioblastoma. He was 54.
The son of Richard H. Hoffman Sr., a NASA engineer, and Mary Rita Hoffman, a homemaker, Richard Hugh Hoffman Jr. was born in Baltimore and raised in Calverton, graduating in 1979 from High Point High School in Beltsville.
He received a bachelor's degree in 1983 in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park and a master's degree in business in 1993 from the Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business.
He began his career at Westinghouse Electric Corp. and later worked at Telecom World Communications. For the last 14 years, he was a general engineer for the federal government's International Broadcasting Bureau in Washington.
The Dayton resident was a baseball and basketball fan. He was also a self-taught sketch artist, family members said. He enjoyed working on home improvement projects.
He was a communicant of St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, 12500 Clarksville Pike, Clarksville, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Hoffman is survived by his wife of 25 years, the former Kathryn "Kate" McNally, a consultant for Mercer in Baltimore; a son, Conor Hoffman, 18, a freshman at Mount St. Mary's University; a daughter, Kathryn Hoffman, 14, a freshman at Glenelg High School; his mother, Mary Rita Hoffman of Sykesville; a brother, Christopher Hoffman of Mount Airy; a sister, Anne McCoy of Houston; and many other relatives.
