Michael S. Raynor, case manager

Michael Raynor (Baltimore Sun)

Michael S. Raynor, a former Harford County resident and a retired case manager, died Dec. 10 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Va., of complications from diabetes. He was 63.

The son of Leslie Ray Raynor and Betty Lee Thompson Raynor, Michael Steven Raynor was born in Richmond, Va., and raised in Edgewood.

He was a 1969 graduate of Edgewood High School, where he was an outstanding pitcher and basketball player. In his senior year at Edgewood, Mr. Raynor threw two no-hit games back to back, pitching 22 straight innings without giving up a hit.

After graduating from Edgewood, Mr. Raynor entered Washington College. In his collegiate debut on the mound in 1970, he pitched the first and only perfect game in the college's history, against Swarthmore College in the season opener, which ended in a score of 3-0.

He was named the team's most valuable player four years in row and was a four-time All-Middle Atlantic conference selection and was twice named its most outstanding pitcher.

In addition to his pitching, Mr. Raynor was also known for his hitting and defensive prowess. He was inducted into the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.

After graduating from college in 1973, he worked for FACETS in Fallston, which was a group home.

Mr. Raynor later moved to Strasburg, Va. Until he retired several years ago, he was a case manager for Leary Educational Foundation in Winchester, Va., where he worked with troubled adolescent boys.

At the foundation, he was charged with implementing and evaluating treatment plans for the boys through behavior modification.

Mr. Raynor, who was diagnosed with diabetes 20 years ago, remained a lifelong baseball fan.

A memorial service for Mr. Raynor will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 3 at The Epicenter at Edgewood, 1918 Pulaski Highway, Edgewood.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, the former Martha Mullin; a son, Deron Raynor of Strasburg, Va.; a daughter, April Himelright of Strasburg; and four grandchildren.
