The son of Frank Kujawa, a Baltimore police officer, and Thelma Kujawa, a factory worker, Michael Dave Kujawa was born in Baltimore and raised in Dundalk, where he graduated from Patapsco High School.

After graduating in 1977 from the Johns Hopkins University, he began his career in the circulation department of The Baltimore Sun as a district sales manager. He was later promoted to field training manager.

In 1985, he left the The Sun and joined the Lexington Herald-Leader in Lexington, Ky., as circulation director, and later became vice president of circulation and marketing there. While at the paper, he had newspaper racks installed at the drive-through lanes of fast-food restaurants.

From 1994 to 1999, he was vice president of circulation and marketing for the Indianapolis Star.

Mr. Kujawa was working for Fort Wayne Newspapers in Indiana as director of circulation when he retired in 2000 after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

One of his career achievements, family members said, was promoting the use of newspapers in education.

Mr. Kujawa's hobbies included golfing, listening to music, reading, boating and travel.

Plans for a gathering celebrating his life, to be held June 17 at the Lido Beach Resort in Sarasota, Fla., are incomplete.

Mr. Kujawa is survived by his wife of 43 years, the former Georgene Bivens; a son, Justin Kujawa of Los Angeles; a daughter, Jennifer Price of Knoxville, Tenn.; a brother, Frank Kujawa of Baltimore; and a grandson.
