Meredith J. "Butch" Wiles, a retired project manager who was a model railroad fan, died May 11 of supranuclear palsy at Carroll Hospice's Dove House in Westminster. He was 67.
Meredith Jerome Wiles was born in Baltimore and raised in Middle River. He graduated in 1965 from Kenwood High School.
From 1967 to 1971, he served as an Air Force staff sergeant, including a tour in Vietnam. He was a 1973 graduate of what is now the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Mr. Wiles, who had worked in the construction industry, was at the Pentagon when it was attacked by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001, and later worked on its reconstruction as part of the Phoenix Project.
Until retiring several years ago, Mr. Wiles was project manager for Jacobs Technology, the advanced technology division of Jacobs Engineering, which provides engineering services to the government.
Mr. Wiles was a drag racing, Orioles and Ravens fan, and he also enjoyed building and operating a large model railroad in a room he constructed in the basement of his Westminster home.
He liked to travel and take cruises, and watch the History and Science Fiction channels on cable TV.
Mr. Wiles married his wife, Susan E. Wiles, in 2006.
"We were engaged to be married in 1970 and broke it off, and married other people," his wife said. "We later reconnected and married."
A memorial service will be held at noon May 27 at the Pritts Funeral Home, 412 Washington Blvd., Westminster.
Mr. Wiles is survived by two sons, Jason Wiles of Decatur, Ga., and Zachary Wiles of Denver; a daughter, Alisa Wiles of Virginia; two stepsons, Tyler Evans of California, St. Mary's County, and Matthew Evans of Seattle; two stepdaughters, Megan Sepp of Severna Park and Meredith Menikheim of Westminster; and five grandchildren.
