Mary Anne Duncan, a retired Verizon senior engineer who also worked for Catholic Charities, died of an infection June 9 at Dove House Hospice at Carroll Hospital Center.
She was 70 and lived in Westminster.
Born in Baltimore and raised in Dundalk, Mary Anne Pilo was the daughter of Frank Pilo, a longshoreman, and Mary Pilo. She was a 1963 graduate of Dundalk High School.
She joined the old Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co., which later became Verizon. She rose through its ranks and was an early female appointee as an engineering assistant.
She worked in downtown Baltimore on projects that included upgrading and enhancing the 911 emergency system
"She was a dedicated and hardworking person," said her husband, Barry A. Duncan. "She was a no-nonsense worker, but also a popular worker."
She retired in 2000 as a senior engineer-project manager after 36 years of service. She then joined the Catholic Charities' Villa Maria Behavioral Health Clinic in Westminster, where she worked another 10 years.
Mrs. Duncan was an active alumnus of Dundalk High School and remained in touch with her classmates. She was also an animal fancier. She enjoyed adult coloring books and 1950s music.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ruck Towson Funeral Home, 1050 York Road.
In addition to her husband of 22 years, who also worked at Verizon, survivors include a daughter, Kelly Schlossenberg of Lutherville;two sons, Jeffrey Duncan of Yardley, Pa., and Gregory Duncan of Rodgers Forge; two sisters, Jean Girvan of Cary, N.C., and Sylvia Bahr of Baltimore County; and six grandchildren.
