Margaret L. Schatz, a clinical social worker who had worked at the Johns Hopkins University Counseling and Psychiatric Services for Students, died Oct. 25 from complications of dementia at Bayleigh Chase, an Easton retirement community.
The former Catonsville resident was 79.
The daughter of Leo Groeninger, a postal worker, and Margaret Tall Groeninger, a homemaker, Margaret Lee Groeninger was born in Baltimore and raised on East 32nd Street.
A 1955 graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory School, Mrs. Schatz earned a bachelor's degree in 1959 from St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg.
She also obtained a master's degree in 1979 in clinical social work from the University of Maryland.
After her marriage in 1960 to Donald Schatz, the couple lived briefly in Hamilton and Towson before moving to Catonsville.
Mrs. Schatz worked as a clinical social worker at the Maryland Training School and from the mid-1970s until the mid-1980s at the Johns Hopkins University Counseling and Psychiatric Services.
After leaving Hopkins, she was in private practice until retiring in 2004. Her husband, who had worked in health care finance for the old Baltimore County General Hospital, also retired, and the couple moved to Easton.
Family members said she enjoyed travel and attending the theater and museums. She was also an avid reader and a member of several book clubs.
Service are private.
In addition to her husband of 56 years, Mrs. Schatz is survived by a son, Robert Thomas Schatz of Denver; a daughter, Susan Caulfield Schatz Wise of Fairfax, Va.; a brother, Robert Groeninger of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and two grandchildren. Another son, Mark Gerard Schatz, died at birth.
