"His Catholic faith meant a great deal to him, and he was very community service-oriented," said a daughter, Mary T. McElroy of Middle River. "When living in Silver Spring, he was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, where he headed the Cardinal's Appeal for years."
In Baltimore, Mr. McElroy was active at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, where he worked with the homeless.

A funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel at Oak Crest Village, 8820 Walther Blvd., Parkville.
In addition to his daughter, Mr. McElroy is survived by two sons, John J. McElroy of College Park and Charles P. McElroy of Cleveland; another daughter, Ann M. McElroy of Laurel; a brother, George J. McElroy Jr. of Parkville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Another son, Robert R. McElroy, died in 1992.
