Jean E. Christy, a former interior decorator and homemaker, died July 25 of arrhythmia at Howard County General Hospital. She was 86.

The daughter of an insurance salesman and a volunteer, Jean Ensign was born and raised in Cleveland and graduated in 1945 from Chagrin Falls High School.

She was a 1949 graduate of Syracuse University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in interior decorating. She worked as an interior decorator for several years before her marriage in 1951 to Robert S. Christy, a civil engineer.

The couple lived in Shaker Heights, Ohio, for many years before moving to Ellicott City in 1971. For the past year, Mrs. Christy was a resident of Columbia.

"Family was of primary importance to her," said her daughter, Dr. Cynthia Christy of Rochester, N.Y.

"She was a very creative person who was constantly expressing this energy with cooking, painting, gardening and bird watching," she said.

Mrs. Christy also enjoyed spending time with her friends, arranging flowers and playing golf.

"She was a gracious host who had a keen eye for decorating," her daughter said.

Mr. Christy died in 2007.

Services are private.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Christy is survived by a son, Craig Christy of Irvine, Calif., and five grandchildren.
