Janice Hearne Bennett, a retired Baltimore County school teacher and real estate agent, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease May 29 at the Pines Genesis in Easton. She was 89 and had lived in Towson before moving to Cambridge and Easton.
Born Janice Hearne in Secretary in Dorchester County, she earned a degree at what is now Salisbury University and moved to Towson. She taught at Lutherville Elementary School for many years. She retired nearly 25 years ago.
"Janice taught many of the children of the players of the Baltimore Colts and Baltimore Orioles," said her nephew, U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett of Baltimore.
She became an early leader of the Teachers Association of Baltimore County.
After her retirement, Mrs. Bennett returned to her native Eastern Shore and lived on Jenkins Creek in Cambridge.
She obtained her real estate license and worked as an agent with Powell Realtors in Cambridge. Family members said she moved to a condominium in Cambridge Harbor near her real estate office. She was a member of the Cambridge Yacht Club and the Maryland Association of Realtors.
In her later years, she resided at Heartfields Assisted Liiving in Easton.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Zeller Funeral Home, 106 Main St. in East New Market in Dorchester County.
In addition to her nephew, Mrs. Bennett is survived by a niece and cousins. Her marriage ended in divorce.
