James J. Cain Jr., a retired National Security Agency official whose career spanned more than four decades, died Saturday at his Severna Park home. He was 76.

The son of James J. Cain Sr. and Mary Kate Rogan Cain, James John Cain Jr. was born in Baltimore and raised on Nicholas Avenue in Northeast Baltimore.

After serving in the Air Force, Mr. Cain, who earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Maryland, College Park, began his 41-year career with the NSA in 1960.

During his years with the NSA, he served as chief of NSA Europe and rose to become a senior executive. After he retired in 2001, he continued working for the agency as a government contractor.

Mr. Cain, a longtime Severna Park resident, was an inveterate reader and also liked gardening and cooking.

Mr. Cain was a communicant of St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road, Annapolis, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Thursday.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Patricia Ann Jaworsky, a medical assistant; a son, Sean Cain of Baltimore; a daughter, Erin Barlag of Cumming, Ga.; and three grandchildren.
