Jacob M. "Jack" Schmulowitz, a retired Social Security Administration division chief, died of kidney failure Wednesday at Sinai Hospital. He was 85.
The son of Polish immigrants Julius Schmulowitz, a baker, and Lillie Schmulowitz, a homemaker, Jacob Martin Schmulowitz was born in New York City and raised in the Bronx.
He was a graduate of William Howard Taft High School in the Bronx, where his classmates included singer Eydie Gorme and Stanley Kubrick, the film director and screenwriter.
Mr. Schmulowitz earned a bachelor's degree from City College of New York in 1950 and a master's degree from Columbia University's School of Social Work in 1960.
In 1961, he joined the SSA in Woodlawn and rose to become division chief of the Office of Research and Statistics. He retired in 1995.
Mr. Schmulowitz, who lived on Glen Avenue in Mount Washington, was a jazz fan and also enjoyed reading and doing research.
He was a member of Temple Oheb Shalom.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sol Levinson & Bros. Inc., 8900 Reisterstown Road.
Mr. Schmulowitz is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Joyce Post; a son, Harold "Hal" Schmulowitz of Catonsville; a daughter, Janet Cohen of Towson; a brother, Stanley Schmulowitz of Washington; and four grandchildren.
