Evelyn M. Stokes, CSX worker

Evelyn M. Stokes, a retired CSX worker who enjoyed cooking, died Jan. 22 at her Abingdon home of ovarian cancer. She was 65.

The daughter of Willie G. Jones Sr., a construction worker, and Thelma Lee Walton Jones, a homemaker, Evelyn MacMorris Jones was born in Oak City, N.C. In 1958, she moved with her family to Brooklyn, N.Y., where she graduated in 1967 from Thomas Jefferson High School.

Mrs. Stokes received a certificate in secretarial science from the Educational Opportunity Center in Brooklyn.

In 1969, she married William M. Stokes Sr., a federal worker, and the next year moved to Baltimore, where she continued her education at Harford Community College and the Community College of Baltimore County, where she studied accounting.

Mrs. Stokes joined what was then B&O/ C&O Railroads in 1970 and worked in administrative positions in a number of departments, including payroll, accounting and information technology. She retired in 2003 from what became CSX Transportation.

She was a member for more than 40 years of Faith Baptist Church, where she participated in the Golden Age Club and served on its scholarship committee.

Mrs. Stokes enjoyed entertaining family and friends and cooking. She favored Southern-style dishes such as fried chicken and turkey wings, said her daughter, Miriam M. Stokes of Dundalk.

She also liked to sew and travel.

Her husband died in 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at her church, 833 N. Bond St.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Stokes is survived by a son, William M. Stokes Jr. of Baltimore; three brothers, John H. Jones Sr. of Hutchinson Island, Fla., Joseph C. Jones of Elmont, N.Y., and Carl L. Jones Sr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister, Mable Wilson of Abingdon; and many nieces and nephews.
