Evelyn D. 'Evelon' Jordan, researcher

Evelyn D. "Evelon" Jordan was a retired Social Security Administration researcher and active churchwoman. (Baltimore Sun)

Evelyn D. "Evelon" Jordan, a retired Social Security Administration researcher and active churchwoman, died March 10 of cancer. She was 87.

Mrs. Jordan was visiting relatives in Lilburn, Ga., at the time of her death, family members said.

The daughter of Lee Davis Jr., a laborer, and Amanda Davis, a homemaker, the former Evelyn Davis was born and raised in South Baltimore.

After graduating in 1945 from Frederick Douglass High School, she earned a bachelor's degree in 1949 from what is now Morgan State University.

After college, she worked as a clerk at Virginia Seminary and College in Lynchburg, Va. In 1954, she took a job at SSA headquarters in Woodlawn, where she was a researcher for 30 years until retiring in 1984.

The longtime resident of Dolfield Avenue, who was known as "Evelon," was an active member for over 75 years of Leadenhall Baptist Church, where she was co-chairperson of Board of Trustees Ministry. She also served as auditing committee coordinator and founded the Citizens Concerned About Community committee.

Mrs. Jordan was president of the Golden Harp Senior Choir, president from 1973 to 1993 of the Missionary Ministry and served as an adviser to the Historical Committee. She was a member of the Courtesy Ministry and Sisterhood Committee. She was a Sunday school teacher and participated in Vacation Bible School.

For 60 years, she was a member of the Sociables, and of the Daiquiri Dolls, now known as the Dolls, for 50 years. She also volunteered with neighborhood and community beautification groups.

Mrs. Jordan met monthly with several friends from college to play bridge. She also enjoyed attending the theater and other cultural events and was a world traveler.

Her husband of 36 years, William Nathaniel Jordan, a painter, died in 1995.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at her church, 1021 Leadenhall St.

Mrs. Jordan is survived by a stepson, William "Billy" Jordan of Baltimore; and many nieces and nephews.
