Ernest T. Davis, construction project manager

Ernest T. Davis

Ernest T. Davis, a retired construction project manager and a World War II B-24 pilot, died Feb. 13 of heart failure at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson. He was 92.

The son of a civil engineer and a government worker, Ernest Theodore Davis was born in Bemis, Tenn., and later moved with his family to Washington.

He was a graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and started engineering studies at the University of Maryland, College Park.

In 1942, he enlisted in what was then the Army Air Corps, and after completing training as a B-24 Liberator pilot, was assigned to the 8th Air Force in England.

Mr. Davis flew 30 combat missions over Germany and attained the rank of lieutenant. After the war, he served with the Air National Guard for four years.

Mr. Davis spent his career as a project manager, working for Knott, Fuller, Perini and Gilbane construction companies, before retiring in 1987.

Some of the major projects he had overseen included renovations to the U.S. Capitol, Navy Memorial, National Cathedral, additions to the Social Security Administration complex in Woodlawn and construction of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. building in Cumberland.

In his retirement, he continued to work as a construction industry arbitrator and an election judge.

The longtime Parkville resident was an amateur photographer and astronomer. He also enjoyed bird watching.

His wife of 44 years, Jeanne Frances Wright, died in 1985.

Plans for a funeral to be held at Arlington National Cemetery were incomplete.

Surviving are three sons, Michael D. Davis of Annapolis, Paul B. Davis of Shrewsbury, Pa., and Dr. Forrest W. Davis of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; a daughter, Carol Davis Hamilton of Cedarcroft; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
