Elizabeth S. Cissel

Elizabeth S. Cissel, whose career as a private school educator spanned more than 30 years, died Tuesday at a Belfast, Maine, nursing home from complications of a fall.

The former longtime Roland Park resident was 90.

The daughter of an insurance executive and a homemaker, the former Elizabeth Short was born in Salisbury and raised in Ednor Gardens.

She was a 1939 graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory School and Colby-Sawyer College in New London, N.H., which was then a two-year college.

In 1951, she earned a bachelor's degree from the Johns Hopkins University.

Mrs. Cissel joined the faculty of Calvert School in 1954, where she taught a variety of subjects. She spent the last decade of her career as a reading specialist until retiring in 1986.

The former Overhill and Wickford roads resident, who moved to Belfast five years ago, had been president of the Women's Board at the old Children's Hospital.

She was a communicant of St. David's Episcopal Church in Roland Park, where she was also a member of the Women of St. David's.

Mrs. Cissel enjoyed playing bridge.

Plans for services were incomplete.

Mrs. Cissel is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Sanders "Sandy" Olson of Troy, Maine. Her son, James Cissel, died in 2009. Her marriage ended in divorce.
