Donald E. Davis Sr., truck driver, dies

Donald E. Davis Sr., a retired truck driver and a former Baltimore resident, died May 31 of a stroke at a medical center in Cookeville, Tenn. He was 80.

Born and raised on Nanticoke Street in Pigtown, Mr. Davis graduated in 1949 from Southern High School.

In 1951, he joined the Navy, where he served aboard the dock landing ship USS Marcos as a seaman until being discharged in 1955.

Mr. Davis worked as a truck driver for Wilkins Coffee in Baltimore from 1955 until the company's closing in 1970. He drove newspaper delivery trucks for the News American from 1970 until the paper closed in 1986.

He worked for three years in the shipping department at Martin Marietta Corp. in Middle River, where he packed and shipped Patriot missiles.

He retired in 1989 and moved to Fort Myers, Fla., and at his death was living in Sparta, Tenn.

Mr. Davis enjoyed dining in Little Italy restaurants and was an avid Orioles and Ravens fan. He had been a member and deacon at Hazelwood Baptist Church on Hazelwood Avenue.

Mr. Davis was a member of Hampton Crossroads Baptist Church in Sparta, where services were held June 2.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years, the former Helen Marr; a son, Donald E. Davis Jr. of Baltimore; a daughter, Lisa Davis Wilson of Glen Burnie; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. An earlier marriage ended in divorce.
