David R. Dalbke, businessman

David R. Dalbke, co-owner of Maryland Glass & Mirror Co. who earlier had been a lease account manager for a truck rental company, died Saturday of multiple myeloma at the Hospice of the Chesapeake in Severna Park.

He was 62.

The son of Raymond Dalbke, a pharmaceutical sales manager, and Helinda "Betty" Dalbke, a homemaker, David Roy Dalbke was born in Phoenix, Ariz., and moved with his family to Long Island, N.Y., where they lived until moving to Original Northwood in Baltimore in the late 1960s.

After graduating in 1972 from St. Paul's School, he earned a bachelor's degree in English in 1976 from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va.

He began his business career with Ryder Truck Rental in Baltimore as a lease account manager and was later promoted to branch manager.

In 1990, Mr. Dalbke and his business partner, John McKenna, purchased Maryland Glass & Mirror Co.

The two partners transformed the small wholesaler into a large regional fabricator of glass and glazing components.

Mr. Dalbke also oversaw the company's move from its longtime Charles Street location to West Ostend Street, and expanded the business to include a state-of-the-art tempering furnace, cutting line and fabrication equipment, family members said.

He had not retired at his death.

The longtime Severna Park resident was an avid waterfowl hunter and enjoyed spending winter weekends with his hunting club in Cambridge. He also liked to golf in Arizona, as well as boat on the Severn River and travel.

Mr. Dalbke hosted Naval Academy midshipmen, providing a home for those students who traveled from out of state and could not return to their homes on leave. Many became lifelong friends, according to family members.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of St. Paul's School, 1152 Falls Road, Brooklandville.

He is survived by a brother, Matthew Dalbke of Pasadena; a stepmother, Dorothea Dalbke of Timonium; and a nephew.
