Sister Columbkill O'Connor, Middle River teacher, dies

Sister Columbkill O'Connor, who taught for many years at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Middle River, died of pulmonary disease Nov. 6 at her order's motherhouse in Aston, Pa.

She was 102.

Born Bridget Mary O'Connor in Castleisland, County Kerry, Ireland, she joined a Roman Catholic religious order in 1935 and professed her vows in 1938.

She was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 78 years. After moving to Maryland in 1942, she earned a bachelor's degree in education from Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg.

She taught for 41 years at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Middle River. She also taught for nine years at Immaculate Conception School in Towson and for two years at St. Peter Claver School in West Baltimore.

Sister Columbkill also had teaching assignments at the Nativity School in Washington, Our Lady of Lourdes School in Bethesda and Immaculate Conception School in Elkton. She also taught for one year at St. Joseph Academy in Chickasha, Okla.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday at Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, Aston, Pa.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.
