Carl B. Sprecher III, a retired civilian employee of the Baltimore County Fire Department, died of stroke complications June 29 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va. The former Essex resident was 73.
Born in Baltimore County, he was the son of Carl B. Sprecher Jr. and his wife, the former Lillian Griffith. He attended Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School. He served in the Navy and was assigned to a post in Iceland.
Mr. Sprecher joined the Baltimore County Fire Department and worked in its Towson supply depot, handling firefighters' uniforms and equipment. He retired in 1998.
He enjoyed driving cars and watching television and game shows, including "Wheel of Fortune."
He moved to West Virginia nearly 18 years ago.
Mr. Sprecher donated his body to the Maryland Anatomy Board.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 15 at Potomac Park Retreat and Conference Center, 11 Tabernacle Way in Falling Waters, W.Va.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, the former Arlene Perrine; two nieces; and three nephews.
