Carl W. "Bill" Benz, a retired health care analyst and outdoorsman, died Wednesday at the University of Maryland Medical Center of complications from cancer chemotherapy. He was 78.
Carl William Benz was born in Pittsburgh and raised in Linesville, Pa., where he graduated from high school. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio, in 1957.
After serving in the Army, he moved to Baltimore to be near his family.
A resident of Ellicott City for 40 years, Mr. Benz was a retired Health Care Finance Administration analyst.
He enjoyed fishing and crabbing on the Eastern Shore and also playing golf, said his wife of 45 years, the former Nina Sullivan.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Harry H. Witzke Funeral Home, 4112 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Benz is survived by a son, William J. Benz of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter, Kathleen Benz Scott of Driggs, Idaho; and three grandchildren.
