Bruce D. Gerwig, a professional golfer and instructor who was the teaching pro at the Hereford Golf Center in northern Baltimore County, died Nov. 15 at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center of stage 4 non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was 65.
The son of Charles and Marjorie Gerwig, Bruce Dudley Gerwig was born in Baltimore and in 1963 moved with his family to the Sunnybrook neighborhood in Phoenix, Baltimore County, where he was raised.
He was a 1968 graduate of Dulaney High School, where he had been an outstanding basketball player. In 1972, he earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.
Mr. Gerwig began playing golf as a child. After college, he became a professional golfer and instructor. A left-handed-hitting pro, Mr. Gerwig taught golf at the Baltimore Country Club, Longview Golf Club in Timonium, and Pine Ridge Golf Course in Lutherville, in addition to other area golf courses and clubs.
In 1972, Mr. Gerwig caddied for Jack Nicklaus when he and Arnold Palmer met in a $25,000 match benefit for the American Cancer Society that was played at Pine Ridge.
When John Invernizzi opened the Hereford Golf Center on York Road in Hereford in 1995, Mr. Gerwig became the center's teaching pro, and was still working there at the time of his death.
Services for the longtime Cockeysville resident will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Lemmon Funeral Home, 10 W. Padonia Road, Timonium.
Mr. Gerwig is survived by his longtime friend Sheila McGraw of Mays Chapel.
