Barbara Lee Goldberg, a retired attorney who was a donor to animal rescue causes, died of a stroke Feb. 27 at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The Phoenix resident was 78.
Born in Baltimore and raised in Cockeysville, she was a 1951 Towson Catholic High School graduate. She earned a bachelor's degree at Towson University and received a law degree from the University of Baltimore. She later returned to school and received two additional master's degrees and a bachelor's degree from what is now Notre Dame of Maryland University.
She worked in the Baltimore County state's attorney's office in the 1960s and 1970s in the era when there were few female legal practitioners. She later opened her own practice in Towson. She retired about 20 years ago.
Miss Goldberg was an avid reader of historical novels. She also traveled and was a donor to Animal Rescue Inc. of New Freedom, Pa.
"Several times a year she would come up and visit us," said Philip Staelens, Animal Rescue's director and treasurer, who lives in New Freedom. "She was one of the kindest persons I had ever met."
Her niece, Victoria H. Chew of Monkton, described Miss Goldberg as a "generous person who had a strong personality."
"She cared deeply about animals of all kinds," her niece said.
She said Miss Goldberg was an enthusiastic Orioles fan. A Republican, she also followed politics and enjoyed reading several newspapers a day. She liked to spend time with her four nieces and nephews.
There are no other immediate survivors.
