Anne T. Pettiford, therapist

Anne T. Pettiford was a retired therapist who lived in West Baltimore and Columbia. (Baltimore Sun)

Anne T. Pettiford, a retired therapist who enjoyed sending cards to family and friends, died April 1 at Baltimore Washington Medical Center of heart failure. She was 92.

The daughter of Frank Thomas, a Congress Hotel bootblack, and Edna Thomas, a McDowell & Co. elevator operator, Anne Virginia Thomas was born in Baltimore and raised in the 500 block of the now-gone Oxford Street, which was near Pennsylvania Avenue.

She was a 1941 graduate of Frederick Douglass High School. Three years later, she married Clinton Pettiford Sr., and the couple settled in West Baltimore.

After raising her four children, Mrs. Pettiford went to work at the old Henryton State Hospital in Sykesville, where she was a rehabilitation therapist. She retired in 1984 at the time of the hospital's closing.

Mrs. Pettiford liked sending greeting cards for every occasion not only to family and friends but also members of Epworth United Methodist Church where she had been an active member since 1981.

She enjoyed reading French and American poets and writing. She also liked bowling, listening to gospel music, traveling, playing pinochle and watching TV news and soap operas.

Since the 2007 death of her husband, who was a Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms and Tobacco agent, Mrs. Pettiford had lived with a daughter in Columbia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at her church, Liberty Road and St. Lukes Lane.

Mrs. Pettiford is survived by a son, Clinton Pettiford Jr. of Woodlawn; two daughters, Brenda B. Jones of Columbia and Jocelyn V. Robinson of Ellicott City; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Sharon Malloy Jackson, died in 2001.
