They consummated the marriage right in the Rikers Island chapel.
An inmate was caught on camera receiving oral sex from his bride during a series of weddings at the troubled jail.
A source provided screen grabs from surveillance video of the mid-day hanky panky in the pokey’s pews last Tuesday. A Department of Correction spokeswoman confirmed that the chapel in the Anna M. Kross Center was being used for several wedding ceremonies at the time.
“We are aware of this incident and are investigating. This behavior is unacceptable and anyone found to be responsible will face consequences,” DOC spokesman Jason Kersten said.
It was unclear if the chapel was being monitored by correction officers at the time of the tryst. Jail staff typically escorts inmates and their spouses to and from the chapel for the weddings, which are supposed to be minutes-long ceremonies that are closely monitored.
A 2008 article in the New York Times on Rikers weddings noted that the bride and groom are only allowed a single kiss after being declared husband and wife.
It’s only the latest example of a romantic romp in city jails. In July, the city announced it was investigating how a female visitor managed to have sex with an inmate at the Manhattan Detention Complex without arousing correction officers’ attention.
In June 2017 a visitor was caught on tape giving oral sex to an inmate inside the George Motchan Detention Center on Rikers. Officers in that incident also said they failed to notice the steamy behind-bars encounter.
In 2011, jail officials banned visitors from wearing miniskirts or ripped jeans in an effort to crack down on sex. Any visitors to city jails wearing revealing clothes are now issued a, extra-large neon green t-shirt that must be worn over their clothes.
