NYPD custodian is department’s latest coronavirus death

A custodian is the 10th civilian employee of the Police Department reported to have died from complications of coronavirus, the NYPD said Wednesday.

Deidre Edwards, who was assigned to the NYPD’s Facility Maintenance Section, died Monday, police said. She had worked for the department since August 2005.

One police detective and four auxiliary police volunteers also have been reported to die of coronavirus or its complications.

Coronavirus tests came back positive for 2,103 uniformed police officers and 373 civilian employees of the department, the NYPD said Wednesday.

On Wednesday, 7,130 officers were on sick report. That accounts for 19.7% of the NYPD’s uniformed workforce.
