Surely among the year’s most heart-tuggingly feel-good stories was the saga of this baby chimpanzee born March 12 to 26-year-old Carole, a resident of the Maryland Zoo at Baltimore. Sadly, Carole proved dangerously negligent in the mothering department, but the story has a happy ending. Zoo staffers nursed Keeva through her first couple of weeks, and in late March, she relocated to Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo and was put under the care of its resident champion chimp-mom, 32-year-old Abby, who had already successfully adopted and raised two baby chimps. At last report, Keeva and Abby were doing just fine.
