D. Watkins

The essayist, social critic and mayoral candidate (turns out he was just kidding about that last one, although plenty of people wish he weren’t) published his first book, “The Beast Side,” in September. In the aftermath of Freddie Gray’s death, his thoughtful, trenchant writings on growing up black on the streets of Baltimore, and on how race continues to be a polarizing issue in the city he still calls home, have taken on new resonance. In October, he lectured at the Johns Hopkins University, in a speech titled, “Baltimore Uprising: The People’s Perspective.”
