Baltimore declares Code Blue cold weather alert through Wednesday morning as temperatures dip into 20s

With temperatures expected in the 20s overnight, Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen declared a Code Blue cold weather advisory through Wednesday morning, the health department said this week.

The multi-agency effort to prevent hypothermia during periods of extreme cold involves extending homeless shelter hours and distributing meals to the needy. The agency declares a Code Blue when temperatures are expected to reach 13 degrees or below, “or when other conditions are severe enough to present a substantial threat to the life or health of vulnerable Baltimore citizens.”

Twelve people have died from hypothermia in Baltimore this winter. The same number of people died of hypothermia all of last winter.

The city has issued 19 Code Blue alerts so far this season.
