Three rescued after boat capsizes near Ocean City

The Coast Guard rescued three people near Ocean City's inlet Wednesday when their 17-foot boat capsized in the rough waves.

Coast Guard Station Ocean City received a report of an overturned vessel about 4:30 p.m. A crew aboard a 47-foot lifeboat was already out on the water for training and was diverted to rescue the mariners. All three were rescued, according to the Coast Guard.

Hurricane Cristobal several hundred miles off the coast was churning seas from Florida to the mid-Atlantic. A small craft advisory for hazardous seas was in effect through Thursday evening for the waters off of Ocean City.

Waves were reaching heights of 5 feet to 7 feet and were breaking unusually early and frequently, according to the National Weather Service. "Breaking waves can easily capsize even larger vessels," the weather service cautioned.
