Everything you need to know about today's winter storm

Baltimore was hit with the biggest winter storm of an already brutal season today, here's a rundown of how the region is coping: 

  • FORECASTThe snow has tapered off, but more winter weather is on the way Thursday night and into the weekend. Get more on the forecast here and here.
  • ACCIDENTS: State officials urge people to stay off the roads; Several accidents have been reported including an overturned tractor trailer at BWI Parkway and the Capital Beltway. Several people were hurt in a collision on southbound I-95 near Aberdeen. 
  • OUTAGES: Some areas have experienced outages, but crews seem to be able to restore power to homes fairly quickly. BGE was reporting less than 20 outages region-wide.
  • HEALTH RISKS: Three people died in Howard County after shoveling snow. The snow is very wet and heavy, adding to the risk. Experts are offering tips and advice for people planning to shovel today.
  • FLIGHTS: 83 percent of the flights out of BWI are cancelled; One percent are delayed; but runways have been cleared and some flights are operating.
  • TRANSIT: Several mass transit options in Baltimore have been suspended: MARC, Charm City Circulator, Commuter Buses; regular MTA bus lines are still in service as well the Light Rail and Metro Subway; expect delays. Amtrak is operating on a reduced schedule.
  • CLOSINGS: All major school systems, the federal government and state offices are closed. Schools including Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Cecil, Frederick, Harford and Montgomery counties have already announced they will be closed tomorrow as well. Most major shopping centers are closed including Towson Town Center, the Mall at Columbia and the Inner Harbor's HarborplaceAttractions like the Maryland Zoo and most museums are also closed. Howard County Public Schools were scheduled to have Friday off prior to the snowfall.
  • WHAT'S OPEN: Some grocery stores, restaurants and bars are open for people to pick up last minute supplies. Food blogger Richard Gorelick has a list on his blog.
