The article on recruiting teachers (“It's a new day for many teachers,” Sept. 4) omits one obvious method: give scholarships to college students who major in education and agree to teach for several years. This method has been used for decades to obtain officers by the Army, Navy, and Air Force ROTC programs.
Many college students today have serious financial problems and will consider this an attractive opportunity. Some will make teaching their careers. Schools can no longer obtain an adequate supply of teachers without spending money to help train them.
