Don't allow Congress to chop SNAP

Thank you so much for highlighting the erroneous reasoning behind new efforts to create work requirements for Americans collecting SNAP (food stamp) benefits (“Workfare push suffers from a flawed premise,” April 13).

SNAP is an incredibly effective program that lifted more than 8 million people out poverty in 2015, including 3.8 million children. Two-thirds of SNAP recipients cannot work as they are children, elderly, or disabled, and more than 80 percent of those who can work do work within one year of receiving SNAP benefits. Restricting SNAP benefits will only produce more hungry Americans, and I call on Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen as well as Rep. John Delaney, who is my congressman, to fight work requirements and restrictions on access to SNAP.

Struggling Marylanders are depending on our leaders to do the right thing. Please do not let them down!
