Don't count out Democrat in 42

The recent Baltimore Sun editorial about the 2018 State House predicts the Republican to be a "virtual lock" to fill the District 42 State Senate seat Democrat James Brochin is leaving to run for Baltimore County Executive (“Maryland politics: A 2018 preview,” Jan. 1). This editorial could have been written right after the 2014 election, but things have changed since then. In 2018, the Democratic wave is going to continue. Democrats are not only going to protect seats we currently hold, we are going to pick up seats across the country as we did in 2017.

There is grassroots energy that is translating into campaign volunteers and campaign donations for Democratic candidates. Democrats and independents are looking for a candidate who will protect Marylanders from Donald Trump's dangerous agenda. Take health care, for example. The Republican-controlled Congress wants to take coverage away from 400,000 people in our state alone. Yet, while hundreds of thousands across the country have showed up to protest, Del. Chris West, the expected Republican nominee in District 42, continues to vote against giving workers a few days of paid sick leave.

District 42 is a diverse district running from the city line to the Pennsylvania border. It encompasses thousands of acres of farmland and two major reservoirs. So when President Trump cuts 100 percent funding for the Chesapeake Bay and doesn't believe in climate change, why would Marylanders elect a candidate like Delegate West who votes party line on every veto including against expanding Maryland's Renewable Energy Portfolio? Even if The Baltimore Sun thinks differently, I'm still going to work hard and keep campaigning because I think this race is far from over.
