Want to make America great again? Take the lead on the climate crisis.

Thanks to Dan Rodricks and The Sun's editorial board for highlighting the recent UN report on climate change (“Scientists, world leaders and military experts take on climate change; Trump golfs,” “Here's what averting climate catastrophe would mean,” Oct. 9). Every report that is released seems to indicate that the decline to our environment is happening at a much faster rate than the last report.

Our president wants to make America great again. Why not do so by having America become the world's leader in addressing this pending disaster of global upheaval due to climate change?

I was born in 1951 and learned from my parents' generation, the Greatest Generation, of their struggles during the Great Depression and then their service and sacrifice during World War II. America mobilized its greatest to overcome these world-wide threats. Even President John F. Kennedy made a Trump-like declaration of putting a man on the moon within the decade of the '60s. Once again America rose to the challenge and placed a man on the moon in the summer of 1969.

Before it is too late and Maryland's islands and coastal communities disappear, we need the leadership from Washington to once again mobilize America's greatest to tackle this world-changing crisis.
