Governor O'Malley modeled the highest form of civic mindedness when he announced his support for marriage equality in Maryland ("O'Malley to lead push for same sex marriage next year," July 22).
As a devout Catholic, he must personally know the great responsibility entrusted to him to serve all Marylanders, even when religious law conflicts with the Constitution. In this act of affirmation, he has shown that all Marylanders are equal under the law and all constituents are equally worthy of dignity.
We applaud his courage and conviction and his leadership in promoting freedom and justice for all Marylanders. His is not an easy road to travel, but it is the kind of leadership that will keep all of us more able to practice our religion and secure the welfare of our families.
