Democrats are tougher than Republicans on border security

In an otherwise unexceptional column on immigration reform, commentator Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. just can't restrain himself from reinforcing a totally false canard about Democrats and border security ("Immigration reform in sight," July 7).

Mr. Ehrlich claims that "most Republicans have been screaming about increased border security since 9/11," then implies that Democrats are "weak" on border security.

In fact, Republican President George W. Bush's administration did little about border security. The administration of Democrat Barack Obama didn't scream, but it did act, with massive increases to the U.S. Border Patrol and significant increases in deportations. As a result the flow back across the border into Mexico is currently about equal to the influx of new illegal immigrants.

The Republicans' budget sequester has cut funding for the Border Patrol, among other things. If Mr. Ehrlich is sincere about wanting continued tight border security, he should change political parties. It is the Democrats, not the Republicans, who have actually addressed the issue with significant actions, not just showboating screams.
