Rep. Donna Edwards did not lose the Democratic primary because she is an African American woman ("Edwards holds endorsement as Democrats seek unity," May 28). She lost because her legislative record does not compare favorably to Rep. Chris Van Hollen's, and her record of constituent support is seriously lacking.
I don't think most Maryland citizens have a problem voting for a woman of color. I sure don't. And, as she points out, Maryland is a liberal-leaning state with a large minority population. I voted for the person, regardless of race or gender, whose record demonstrated he could best serve Maryland in the U.S. Senate. Others did the same.
Ms. Edwards needs to stop blaming Maryland citizens for her defeat. She lost to a more appealing candidate.
