Stand up for freedom

How can we fight back against the erosion of American rights and freedoms?

Many Maryland citizens are very concerned about the current political climate created by Donald Trump and his administration. In the face of daily directives, tweets, misrepresentation of facts and executive orders that attempt to revoke or threaten the rights of the majority of Americans, we rely on our Congressional representatives to stand fast. The Annapolis Residents for Civil Liberties, a grassroots organization launched after the November election, expresses its sincere appreciation and thanks to Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen for opposing the confirmations of Betsy DeVos for education secretary and Mike Pompeo as director of the Central Intelligence Agency ("Senate confirms Mike Pompeo as CIA director," Jan. 23).

Further, we applaud our senators' condemnation of the hiring freeze on federal agencies, their support for the Affordable Care Act and Senator Cardin's statement in support of LGBTQ rights. We are grateful that our elected officials are working to ensure that unconstitutional actions by this administration are not normalized, and we encourage them to continue to challenge any efforts to erode the rights and freedoms of all people.
