Santelises a great choice

Has Baltimore finally gotten the school leader that the city needs?

I am beyond thrilled that the Baltimore City school board unanimously approved a four-year contract for new CEO Sonja Santelises ("Board city school board approves contract for new CEO, other leadership appointments," May 11).

Ms. Santelises is a results-driven leader, and she relies on facts and statistics — not solely educational theories — to support what works. I had the pleasure of working with her on Jemicy's inaugural program with Baltimore City Public Schools in which Jemicy teachers helped train K-2 Baltimore reading teachers to identify and work with children with learning differences. She understands the diversity of learners and knows that not all kids learn the same way. Her unwavering support of the program has helped the city's youngest students start off with the solid foundation that is essential for success in life.

I wish Ms. Santelises the best of luck and applaud the Baltimore City school board for finally giving students a leader that they deserve.
