Timeline: Sheila Dixon's Career

More than five years since her resignation, former Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon says she is running in the 2016 mayoral race. Her announcement comes as incumbent Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake faces backlash from the recent unrest following Freddie Gray's death.

Dixon became mayor in 2007 and resigned in January 2010 after she was convicted of stealing gift cards meant for the needy and pleading to a perjury charge. She became eligible to run for office again after her probation ended two years ago.
