Subsidizing non-public schools pays off [Letter]

In response to the comments made by Kenneth A. Stevens of Columbia regarding Maryland subsidizing non public schools ("Why does Md. subsidize non-public schools?" July 11), I would like to ask "why shouldn't they be subsidized?" Each of my three children went to "non-public" schools for 12 years. We paid large tuition bills in addition to paying high property taxes because we lived in the Homeland area of Baltimore City. We deserved all of any subsidy given.

I would like to know what the state of Maryland would do if all the students in "non-public" schools left those schools and went to "public" schools. Mr. Stevens should be grateful for the "non-public" schools.
