Regulate the banks

Banks shouldn't make risky investments with taxpayers' deposits

Dan Rodricks' recent column attributing amnesia to our Congress and president for dispensing with the requirement that big banks refrain from making risky investments with taxpayers' deposits was right on target ("For too many in Washington, a phantom recession," Dec. 21).

How many more "great recessions" do Americans have to endure before we realize that the interests of 300 million citizens should trump the interests of the small group of extremely wealthy and powerful individuals who influence Congress?

It's time to restore tighter regulation of the banking industry and to remove big money from politics in general.
