Daniel Francis Smeragliuolo, a former Boys' Latin School of Maryland associate dean and social worker who enjoyed sailing, ended his life Dec. 27 at his Chautauqua, N.Y., home. The former Gibson Island resident was 59.
Born in Dunkirk, N.Y., he was the son of Alfonso Smeragliuolo, a musician and conductor, and his wife Clara Ann Nalbone. He earned a bachelor's degree at Canisius College in Buffalo and had a master's degree from the University of Maryland School of Social Work. He initially worked in sales at the TRW firm in Jamestown, N.Y.
In 1987 he moved to Baltimore, where he joined the Boys' Latin School faculty and served as associate dean of students. He also taught social studies and history.
In the mid-1990s he taught and was a social worker at the Kennedy Krieger High School in Northwest Baltimore. He also worked in Anne Arundel County schools, at the Living Classrooms Foundation and for the Board of Child Care of the United Methodist Church.
Mr. Smeragliuolo was an avid Chesapeake Bay recreational sailor. He resided on Gibson Island and became the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron commodore, a post he held from 2011 to 2013.
"In a purely tongue-in-cheek maneuver, he once rigged a wind-surfer on the bow of his single-masted sloop, Object Permanence, to qualify for the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race," said John Hope, a friend and Living Classrooms colleague. "Race officials were sufficiently amused to allow his boat to participate."
Mr. Smeragliuolo moved to Chautauqua in 2013 and became clinical operations director for three mental health clinics at The Resource Center. He recently served as director of behavioral services for Gateway Longview, a Buffalo mental health service agency.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Living Classrooms Foundation, 802 S. Caroline St.
Survivors include a daughter, Anna Smeragliuolo of New York City; his mother, a Jamestown resident; and two sisters, Debbie Smeragliuolo, also of Jamestown, and Diane Smeragliuolo of Boca Raton, Fla. His marriages to Rachel Wilder and Susan Owen ended in divorce.
